Changing The Way We View Community

We have embarked on a new decade. Today more than ever, we live in a global community and the evidence is everywhere. Video conferencing with colleagues, friends, loved ones; collaborating with folks from other countries on a project; making a career transition through e-learning resources abound. The connection between our dreams and the attainment of our goals is stronger now than ever before. At this moment, we can only adapt and reevaluate as the ground shifts under our feet.

There has been a proliferation of data in the last ten years, and with that: excitement and optimism for what’s to come. What we can do with it. What we can learn from it. How it can change our lives and the lives of our friends locally and abroad. Given the nature of Women in Data, a non-profit organization with a mission to increase diversity in data careers, we see so much opportunity for women. Data Science and AI are new frontiers that have benefited from the previous decade and the new 20s will belong to the crafters and refiners of this exciting opportunity and breakthrough.

We are so excited to be a part of this tremendous growth and to serve as a resource for women seeking the expansion of their career on a global scale. While we’ve had our Vancouver, British Columbia chapter for some time, we were able to open new chapters in Kolkata, Berlin, and Nairobi, among others on this very fitting year. Modern trends we have been seeing are likely to accelerate now, and Covid-19 will persuade that acceleration further as it has changed our collective reality. Our response will be to make the right next decision through the lens of our values and people.

Companies that are flexible to the needs of their workers and customers, remote-friendly and diverse are able to weather the uncertainties this new decade brings. Values tie organizations to those volunteering their time and energy to them, and as humans on this planet, we can say that now -perhaps for the first time- we are all living through a collective experience. Perhaps a big part of that is redefining what it means to develop a career. Perhaps the way of the future is creating community across the various layers that make up the fabric of our lives. People are at the core of Women in Data and our top priority is to establish a safe and trusted space for women to expand their data careers in a way that inspires joy and excitement. Welcome to all the new chapters. We are so happy to have you!

In the meantime, we hope everyone is staying safe and we wish lots of luck and success to those who are job searching, learning, and growing. We will make it through this stronger than ever. If you are looking for resources now, we are making our webinars and virtual meetups available. This week we had four virtual WiD meetup events happening and we will keep them coming while we’re staying home.

Thank you all so much for coming to our events and for your wonderful support.

Until we meet again,
