About Asya Spears
Asya Spears is a Biostatistician turned STEM Education researcher who focuses on how data skills are cultivated and applied to advance equity in spaces where data is a part of the conversation. As the founder of Rose Data Studio, a data career strategy firm, she teaches skills beyond theory and coding that enable women to align with their passions, showcase their talent, and thrive in their professional endeavors to use data for good.
Asya studied Math at Spelman, a Historically Black College that gave her a foundation in creating inclusive learning environments. She earned her MS in Biostatistics at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, where she discovered joy in making statistics concepts accessible to others in Public Health. Currently, she is pursuing her Ph.D. in Policy Analysis at the Pardee RAND Graduate School, with an emphasis on data literacy as a key component of advancing health equity.
Overview
There is inequality in data careers but Asya shares how we approach this problem and find a solution based upon her research. Asya discusses why more people need to speak up and share their ideas on this issue, and she shares her own experiences where she thought differently than everyone else in the room and what the results were.
