How we move forward
Like many, we are upset and angry at last week’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court.
We’re upset because Women in Data strives to be an advocate for women’s equality in the workplace, but we can’t make progress if women are being denied even the most basic of rights outside of the workplace.
While we know the U.S. is not alone in this battle and there are many countries where women are still advocating for basic rights, we’re frustrated because it feels like the world is taking steps backward by recreating obstacles we thought we overcame.
We must find a way to continue to fight for a better today and a better tomorrow. But first we believe it’s important to give our community the space to scream, to cry, to protest and to process these emotions so many of us are feeling.
We know by giving ourselves this time, we will be able to turn our anger and grief into positive action.
Our community is full of strong and courageous women and allies, and we hope to use this as a wake-up call for all of us to continue to advocate for the rights of women and girls around the world.
As data professionals, we assess problems every day, we find and analyze the data, review the facts, and logically share our recommended solutions. We’re trained to watch for and avoid bias. And we know it’s important to stay curious, to ask questions and to learn from each other along the way.
This is how we can create a brighter future where we move forward, not backward, and enable a world where decisions are made by women, not for them.
