The Vision Behind Visionaries
One of the many things we love about our community is how diverse and dynamic our members are. Our members come from all backgrounds and are talented in many different ways beyond data.
When Women in Data decided to create our first NFT collection, we knew we wanted it to celebrate our community. And we thought, what better way to celebrate our community than by having our NFT collection created by members of our community.
In early 2022, WiD members Diane Ortiz-MacLeod, Tressa Rivers, Cristina Carlos and several others began creating our Visionaries. Most of these artists spend their days working in a data or tech-related career but also have a passion for art. In addition to sharing a love of creativity, Diane, Tressa and Cristina all had another thing in common - they all had a curiosity to learn more and dive deeper into the world of Web3 and NFTs.
Creating an NFT was a new experience for all of our artists. Many NFT collections are created in layers. The layers are then combined in thousands of combinations to create a collection of similar, but unique pieces. Not all NFTs need to be created this way, but we liked the idea of creating a token for our members that was unique and also represented belonging to something bigger.
While the process of creating thousands of pieces sometimes felt like an impossible feat for our artists, they persisted.
“When you are passionate about something you find the grit and persistence necessary to overcome whatever doubt is stalking you, and come out into the sunshine,” said Tressa.
Creating something new with other artists was also a new experience. While collaborating with other artists isn’t always easy, this was also something the team came to appreciate through the process. It was an opportunity to learn from each other, and to bring different styles and diversity to the NFT collection.
Cristina shared that learning to work with other artists was educational and allowed her to think differently and creatively.
For Diane, it was incredible to come together with essentially strangers at first to create something beautiful with a common vision.
And create something beautiful they did. We hope you enjoy the collection and feel inspired by our Visionaries and the artists behind them.
For our artists, this collection represents the beauty in diversity and the courage in our community. It helps challenge the idea that those working in data or technology come in only shape and color. Most of all, these visionaries represent the future.
